The West Village Halloween Parade is an annual spectacle for everyone. Dancers, giant puppets, floats, and lots of costumed New Yorkers travel from Canal St. to West 15th.
Anyone wearing a costume can march or watch for free.
How It Began
The parade began in 1974, created by puppeteer Ralph Lee, who originally organized it as a small neighborhood event for children and friends. Later it evolved into a massive citywide celebration, drawing tens of thousands of participants and spectators.

Why It’s Important
The parade celebrates the city’s diversity and tradition. Events like this remind the city that it shares a community with the millions of others who live here.

Why Visitors Should Go
For visitors, it’s New York experience. You can join the march by showing up in costume. There’s theatrical performances, bands, floats, and thousands of costumed New Yorkers and visitors.
